Not-so-grinch-y

As most of my friends will probably tell you,
this time of year I tend to get a little cranky, even grinch-y.
Normally I am so busy decorating other peoples, houses, trees, parties, you-name-it,
I hardly have time to decorate my own house, tree, party...
not to mention trying to make Christmas 'happen' for two boys and a husband.
Well, THIS year, I got a break.  While business has been steady, it has not been crazy.
I actually have time to breathe....I am not as cranky as one normally would find me this time of year!
I am not so grinch-y, I actually may be slightly....festive!!!
So with out further delay, proof that Christmas is coming to the Curtis house this year!

It all started with a couple of gingerbread house kits and a hot glue gun...
yes, I did hot glue those darn things together.....nobody is really going to eat the gingerbread anyway!

Candy decorations galore, waiting to be so carefully affixed to the houses.
(Did I mention I have two boys??? Carefully might not be the optimum word here.)

During an impromptu sleepover with two of the boys' buddies, the houses were completed.
Of course I had to turn something completely non-competitive into a competition....
Older brothers vs. Younger brothers.
And of course, none of the parents would actually commit to who won...

I did think the use of the pizza box top from dinner to create a snowy yard was quite clever...

And then...it was time for the tree....
As usual, I am in charge of the lights.
I am in charge of the lights, well, because, there is one way to put lights on a tree.....
and no one in my family seems to do it correctly... ;)

Lights on, time to move on to the ornaments.
So many people ask me what my home and tree look like.  I think they have grand visions of a completely styled tree and home holiday decor... I have to remind people that I am a mom and I have children and they LOVE the ornaments that we have accumulated over the years.
This year was the first year in 12 years that we have had white lights on the tree....I must say, as crazy as it sounds....I kind of miss the colored lights with the myriad ornaments...
Well, the ornaments are stored in boxes that we use over and over every year.
Each year I try to carefully place each ornament in its own little cubby in the box...

Until I get tired of trying to place hundreds of unruly ornaments in cubbies...and then I end up with something like this...

Cubby or no cubby, the ornaments are extracted from the boxes by the boys and our tree ends up something like this...I try my best not to move too many once they are placed!

I do have a few favorites...
Buddy the Dog...

The ornament looks vaguely similar to the real-life Buddy-the-Dog.  (Do you see the scissors and the fur on the ground??? It took me an hour to get all the dreads off the darn dog....remind me never to get a long-haired dog again.  I am so not into maintenance.....getting grinch-y....)

I digress...ornaments...
I have photo frames of the boys on the tree beginning from the year Will was born...
it is so fun to see how much they have grown and remember how tiny they were.

The Nativity ornament always gets tucked deep into the tree
as it is so heavy none of the outer branches can hold its weight.
I love that the Christmas story is encompassed so simply and beautifully on one ornament.

And there are the ornaments that are reflections of my boys....the soccer ball for Patch (and the endless soccer season that we live in) and the SPAM musabi for Will (yes, Will likes SPAM musabi as well as Hawaii where he loves to get them).  You can see the sail boat in the background....for the sailing season that lasts half the year in our house.

And the Hawaiian angel....my mom-in-law got this for me one year...she knows how much I adore the Aloha state...

My house continued to get dressed....stockings were hung...
This stocking I have had since before I can remember.
My great Auntie Ellen made it for myself and my brother when we were just babies.

Before she passed away she made one for each member of my family....I love these sweet memories of my awesome Aunt- Entrepreneur,  Professional golfer and Bridge Player...Fiesty one she was!

(The top part of my mantel gives you a hint of what I would do to my entire house and tree if there were not little people around.. :) )

And in the space where I am waiting to find the perfect chandelier for above our piano (that no one plays), the closest Santa Barbara will get to a white Christmas...

Wishing you all the best this season!!!

Cheers!

Sunstone Villa on Style Me Pretty

Hola!

I just made it back from Tulum from my friend's wedding.
Photos to follow from the incredibly special weekend (ok, extended weekend).
I have great stories, including the new knowledge of how to get a passport in less than 12 hours....
(my husband, not me!).

In the meantime....
I came back to this fun little feature on Style Me Pretty today....enjoy!
We loved doing the floral design for this one.

Cheers!

Featured on 100 Layer Cake....

Happy Wednesday!

As we head into a fabulous wedding weekend we wanted to share this with you....

Meg and Carver were one of the sweetest, most genuine, adorable....
ok, I could put down adjectives all day describing how fabulous these two were...
We had SO much fun helping create their wedding, finding out their personalities and translating those details into a celebration of them as a couple....enjoy!

ps.... the confetti you see....well, our amazing TOAST team cut each and every one of those pieces of paper to match their color palate... we even had glitter paper... :)  And yes, if you are an intern at TOAST, your job may or may not involve vacuuming lawns after events... ;)

Cheers!

Sunday Morning Flowers

We are halfway through our event marathon for summer and fall....

Wanted to share some flowers from over the weekend
(which, was ridiculously warm by the way...flowers and 105 degree temps don't get along so well.....nor do flower coolers and refrigerators....).
Sunday morning- after all of Saturday's intensities....I had some time to  s l o w l y  put together this piece for  DJ friend, Gavin Roy for his set-up at the wedding faire in SB.

Happy Monday...now on to clean up the studio....

Cheers!

A beautiful bouquet on Style Me Pretty

Hello.

Last year we had a fun little bouquets-only order for one of the most relaxed clients I have ever met...well, actually, I only met her on her wedding day when we dropped off the bouquets.  The fun story behind her bouquet is that as I was creating it, it kept getting a little bigger and bigger as I kept adding more peonies and flowers to fill in spaces that were not 'even.'  You can imagine how relieved I was to meet this wonderful (and tall) bride in a full-skirted dress.  Her height and dress balanced out her bouquet fabulously!

Have a great Tuesday!

Cheers!

The Event Marathon Begins

Hello all....
Yes, we know, the posts have been few and far between
but this might give you some insight into our daily lives.....organized chaos!
We are getting ready for an amazing wedding this weekend, the kick off to an
I-don't-know-how-many-weekend run of weddings and events
(let's just say, I can't wait to be a GUEST at a wonderful friend's wedding at a certain Caribbean locale in November....yes, we have to wait until NOVEMBER to come up for air....).
Needless to say- if you are currently an intern at TOAST;
1) Thank you.  Not sure what we would do without you all!
2) Did you ever thinking cutting tiny pieces of paper and
countless circles of paper could be so rewarding??? ;)
Stay tuned- a post in the very near future will introduce you to this season's team of 10 (yes, I typed 10!) incredibly gifted and talented interns....  AND also check back for details from Meg and Carver's wedding this upcoming weekend- we LOVE this duo- they are SO much fun and SO sweet-
we just absolutely adore them....

Happy 4th of July!

Cheers!

Baby Bliss

Well hellllooooo!
I knew it had been a while....but over a month! Geesh! So sorry.
We've been busy.  Gearing up for a crazy wedding season....you all are in for a real treat come later this Summer and Autumn....but in the meantime, we had the most wonderful opportunity to work on the sweetest little baby shower....
Hosted by the ever-amazing Caroline Diani
(you must visit her shops clothes, shoes and online hereher eye for fashion is unequalled).
The shower was for her assistant, Victoria and her baby-boy-to-be, Dylan.
An all-white theme was in order and we incorporated the natural white tones and earthy elements of Caroline's gardens.  Garden roses, clematis vine, and button mums along side succulents and natural cotton bolls. Diaper pins and pacifiers finished off the the baby touches along with the slightest touches of baby-blue on the dessert table and the calligraphy on the place cards.
Caroline herself catered the lunch with the tiniest bit of help from Renauds and the ever-amazing Enjoy Cupcakes (Amber just had a baby boy herself- we found out when we drove up to Los Olivos to pick up the cupcakes for Victoria's shower...congrats to her family!).

Enjoy the images....

Cheers!

The Toaster

Happy Sunday to all.....it feels like June here in SB.....the fog has not lifted all day!  I made a quick trip down to Calabasas this morning....78 degrees and sunny....Santa Barbara...59 and grey.
I guess paradise can't always be perfect huh???

Anyway, I believe I promised some pictures of the Toaster a while back.....well, when the talented
Raya Carlisle came to do our little photo shoot for The Wedding Standard, she happened to snap some shots of our little studio office.....have a peek around...... :)

The Wedding Standard....

I normally like to stay in the background at events and weddings.....not a huge "in the spotlight" type of person, so this was fun and challenging at the same time.
Thanks Josh at The Wedding Standard for pushing me out of my comfort zone... ;)
Also a huge thanks to Raya Carlisle who came to my home/TOAST
to shoot me and my crazy dog! Please see picture of crazy dog, Buddy, the TOAST mascot.
Thanks also to Lisa Gaede and Rocio Valenzuela for doing my hair and make-up.
I think they did a pretty darn good job. :) Contact TOAST for booking info for Lisa and Rocio.

Happy Reading!

Cheers!

A Glimpse Back at Dream Foundation's Gala 2011

This past November we were honored to be a part of the
Dream Foundation' 10th Annual Celebration of Dreams Gala.
Not only was planning, coordinating and working on the design elements
of the event remarkably exhilarating,
working alongside incredibly talented individuals in their own specialties was quite an honor.
Some of my favorite details involved the hot gluing of hundreds of geodes,
that we had hammered apart ourselves,
to twisting pieces of sandblasted grapevine that ran down the tables.
Finishing off the tablescapes were unique pieces from Donna Karan's home collection.
Tobacco leaf covered containers in various shapes and sizes
added the perfect 'raw elegance' to the tables.

Enjoy this highlight clip from last fall's gala and if you would like more information on supporting the Dream Foundation, you may follow the link here.

Lavender Blooms on Once Wed

Happy Monday to you all! (Yep, love Mondays).

We had the pleasure of meeting and working with photographer, Elisa of Elisa B. Photography, http://www.elisabphotography.com from Charlottesville, Virginia recently.
We planned this styled shoot from opposite sides of the country
utilizing ever-helpful Pinterest boards and
we think it came together rather well... :)
Enjoy the images featured on Once Wed....

Fia's 3rd Birthday

My sweet and feisty little niece had her 3rd birthday this weekend.
Miraculously the garden party was held in the garden and it didn't rain during the party!
Before, yes. After, yes. During, no.
Fia wanted ladybugs and flowers and she got them both...
...and a dragon painted onto her face with gold sparkles instead of princesses and butterflies
like the other little girls were getting.
She growled and roared like a dragon when everyone sang Happy Birthday to her.
LOVE her.

More birthday sunniness!

In case you needed a few more images to brighten this grey day...Here you go!
More fun shots from my mom's birthday.
In case you were interested, the forks are from both my grandmother's silver sets that have been passed down from generation to generation for? I don't know how long...
it's pretty cool to see the monograms on the silverware from the different family initials. Another fun little piece of info- all of the containers for the flowers were from my mom's silver and pewter collections. Many of the pieces were also her grandmother's grandmother's.

Cheers!

ps. LOVE the La Tavola Linens! :) My mom went into the showroom and spent almost an hour playing with all the samples! So much fun!

Sunny 70th birthday Celebration!!!

Ribbons and memories were just a few things that made up this birthday extravaganza. This birthday was particularly special to Toast because the birthday girl just happened to be Kim's mommy.  We had quite the experience fighting the wind over which way the ribbons would lay but it turned out beautiful and cheery! Full of bright oranges and yellows and wonderful pictures that captured the guest of honor's beautiful life throughout the years.  We hope she enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed putting it together!
Happy Birthday Cyndy!
